Obituary for Rowena Pamelia Charles

Rowena Pamelia Charles
Rowena Pamelia Charles was born on September 6, 1946 at West Coast Demerara, Guyana. She was the eldest daughter of 8 children born to Hubert Piercy and Enid Dulcia Austin. She was the sister of Bernice, Parnell, Marva, Nadine, Arlington, Godfrey and Nebert. On July 4, 1970, Rowena married Philip Charles in Guyana and soon after, they started a family.

With the birth of their son, Ray Alex, they immigrated to the United States and moved to New Jersey to be close to her parents living off of Snyder Avenue in New York. They extended their family with the birth of twins, Marlon Alonzo and Nigel Orson. Soon the family moved to the warm weather climate of San Diego, California.

While in San Diego, Rowena pursued a study in Nursing and graduated from San Diego City College where she gained a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing. Her mother, Enid, traveled all the way from New York to celebrate this momentous occasion. She worked as a nurse in various hospitals and senior care homes throughout San Diego. At the same time, Rowena also was a single mother who raised three boys to be outstanding men.

Throughout her time in San Diego, Rowena made many friends, like Fannie Fields, Evelyn and Joan Roberts to name a few. Rowena attended St. Mark's Episcopal Church. She hosted many family members that came to visit her in California.

Rowena's memory will be treasured by her sons, Ray, Marlon and Nigel (Elizabeth), her grandchildren, Joanna, Kelsey and Khyle and numerous nieces and nephews.
